PC2ESSAY

Introduction
I have read the Cabinet texts “The Clinical Orgasm” by Rachel P. Maines and “Appliance Theory” by Jennifer Gabrys. I also have read the project about indoor gardening from the webpage;

Tele-gardening

In the following text I will discuss from my perspective on interactive and technological designs and how we are applying technology in our daily life. I also want to give my point of view of technological pleasure and human acceptance.

Pleasure, Comfort & Humanity?

Is everything great and lovely? After I have read all the texts I just come up with the thought of acceptance! From the beginning when the human applied technological devices into our lives humans were sceptical and scared. We didn’t know what these things could do to us, what damage it could cause. But that was a long time ago, nowadays we just accepting most devices on the market even duo it could give us cancer or some other strange disease. We even cook our food in microwaves! But we do smoke as well we know about the damage it will cause us.
Matsushita in Japan is presenting an indoor gardening system who’s lighting, temperature and water supply can be remotely monitored and controlled via the Internet. The project allows web users to control a robotic arm in order to observe and tend the garden filled with living plants.
It is a nice project where the designers has thought about a new way of interact whit plants, the need of taking care of things has always been a strong habit for people. The thought that gets to my mind about the project is that there is no need for physical contact. Okay it’s just a plant, but anyway I don’t think we should develop more things like this, interaction robot who do this nice things as taking care of your little garden at home. This is just a new way of making the human feel more not needed. Pleasure without real physical contact.
I guess there is a huge need fore this kind of deigns in our modern time but what if we could develop more designs on the real nature and real human contact.

When I read the text “The Clinical Orgasm” by Rachel P. Maines I realize that when the human don’t get the attention and stimulation as sex for example, we get sick! And it is not strange that we come up with an idea that could counteract this kind of sickness. So we come up with the brilliant idea of designing “I make it on may own instead” device, instead of designing a for the real problem witch are human contact!
Maybe I’m an old fashioners who grow up at the countryside. But I don’t get the point of not be able to physical touch and be with animals, people and all beautifulness of our world. Also a big problem with this kind of design is that they are created by human, programmed by human and therefore we don’t get the real feeling just the false. We have al this different kind of robots making our life more comfortable and “extension our arms”, but what are we really trying to reach? Do we really want to live in a world that is created by human mind? Boring and predictable I would say…

But I think that many designers think just like me and want to get more physical interaction between people even doe it will happen with help of the modern technique.
